What is unique about Toivo?
Toivo is a peer-run center for holistic healing and stress management. Collectively, our staff has experienced mental health and substance use challenges, trauma, homelessness, hospitalizations, incarceration, abuse and other devastating personal circumstances. Utilizing the techniques offered at Toivo, we have transformed our lives. From a place of humble gratitude and understanding, as well as expert training, we share these modalities with others. Whether you or a loved one is currently struggling or you are simply looking for accessible and affordable ways to establish or maintain your health and well-being, we welcome you, just as you are.
Who comes to Toivo?
Toivo is open to everyone. Whatever your experience level and wherever you are on your healing journey, we welcome you to join us and find the activity that is right for you.
What is the significance of the Toivo logo?
The Toivo logo is a lotus flower. A lotus flower grows in water with its roots in the mud. The mud represents pain and suffering. The lotus represents transformation, rising above circumstance and finding meaning in the struggle. The heart within the flower represents our heart-centered approach to everything we do.
How much do classes cost?
Most classes and workshops have a suggested donation of $5 – $15 and support groups are free. Occasionally, we do offer a workshop or training with a set fee. We do our best to provide scholarship opportunities for these events and they are clearly marked on our schedule.
Do I need to sign up for activities beforehand?
Drop-ins are welcome and encouraged for most of our classes. If an RSVP is suggested it will be written in the description of the class. You may pre-register online using the calendar or by using the Toivo app available on Apple and Android phones.
Do I have to sign up for a membership?
We do not ask participants to sign up for memberships, commit to a certain number of classes or join for any specific length of time. We hope you will drop in when the time feels right and continue coming for as long as you like!
Do I need a referral to come to Toivo?
We do not require referrals.
Do I have to bring my own yoga mat, drum or any other materials to Toivo activities?
You are welcome to bring your own supplies and equipment; however, we do provide all the necessary equipment and materials for our activities.
Do I have to wear special clothing?
Fitness or yoga clothing is not required or expected. You are encouraged to come as you are and wear what you feel most comfortable in. That being said, for movement-based classes, we do suggest wearing clothes that are stretchy, loose or easy to move in.
Do you offer classes for children and/or childcare?
We do not offer childcare, but we do offer family-focused classes from time to time. Even when we do not have family-focused classes on the schedule, the majority of our regular activities are open to children as long as they are interested in participating.
Is the building wheelchair accessible?
All of our temporary locations are wheelchair accessible.
What if I need special accommodations?
If you are in need of additional support or accommodations, please call us directly so we can do our best to prepare before you arrive.
Where can I park?
Parking Info for The 224 EcoSpace
If you are driving, please follow these parking instructions carefully. In front of the building, you can park in the row up against the purple 224 building and in the leftmost two lanes. In back of the building, people can park anywhere. The back entrance will probably be locked so you would have to walk around to the front entrance if you park in back. If you park in front of the building in the middle area, you risk being towed. After you park, look for a 224 parking sign. If you don’t see one nearby, move your car to an area where you see one.
Parking Info for Advocacy Unlimited (AU)
You can park in the spots marked “Reserved Advocacy Unlimited” in the parking lot right outside the AU building. If all those parking spots are taken, you can park in the Old Post Office Plaza next door to 60 Court Street or you can park on West Main Street which has metered parking. Street parking is free after 5 pm in New Britain.
Parking Info for 56 Arbor Street in Hartford
There is plenty of free parking around the building. There are four entrances to the building. The Real Art Ways entrance will *not* get you to Suite 409. The other three entrances will. If the outside building door is locked, use the key pad and enter 2004*. Once you enter the building, look for the elevator and take it to the fourth floor. After you get off the elevator, walk straight ahead and you’ll see Suite 409. Suite 409 is the Soul Warrior Headquarters.
Can I speak to someone for support if needed?
As Toivo staff members, we use our lived experience to support others. As long as we are available, we will gladly meet with you. When possible, calling ahead can help to ensure that someone will be available to speak with you.
Are there volunteer opportunities available at Toivo?
We do not have set volunteer opportunities available at Toivo. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us directly to find out where our current needs lie.
How do I become a facilitator at Toivo?
We are always interested in hearing about different workshop, group and training ideas and we love to connect with new teachers we haven’t met! If you are interested in sharing your offerings with our community, please e-mail us at info@toivocenter.org.
